Native of Hometown, Illinois, James Buncak studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago from 1973-1975. He later studied with his mentor, Eugene Hall in Rockford, Illinois. At the Academy and in the studio of Eugene Hall, James focused on painting and drawing techniques of the Russian masters Nicolai Fechin and Illya Repin.
James arrived in Homer, Alaska in 1984. He was drawn to paint the local landscapes in Homer and surrounding areas as well as portraits of it's people.
James has taught life drawing at his Lake Street art studio and other locations. He has had many one-man art shows in Homer, and has shown in Cordova and Kenai, Alaska. James has also shown in Chicago, Illinois at the Bill Parks Gallery.
James continues to paint the raw and ever changing Alaskan landscapes, and the diverse and interesting people he encounters.
